As the global demand for energy grows, so does the need for effective solutions to ensure reliable power. Technology – like natural gas engines and landfill gas engines – is delivering output to customers around the world. But these solutions make very different demands on the oil inside them.
That’s why we’ve developed two different specialised products. PETRONAS Geo BLG oils provide more than just excellent anti-wear properties, they’re formulated to deliver extra protection against landfill gases that contain engine-damaging impurities like halogen, siloxane and sulphur.
Meanwhile, PETRONAS Geo NG oils provide the excellent piston deposit, sludge and ash control qualities desirable in lubricants used in natural gas engines.
Diesel- and petrol-engine oils are formulated for known and predictable fuels. The fuels are formulated to be relatively benign to the engines and the environment in which they operate. The gases used as fuels in gas engines can originate from several sources: natural gas from underground reservoirs, biogases from plant or animal matter and process gases which are usually byproducts from a variety of industrial processes. Many of these gases are rich in methane but also have a high acid content, which can destroy a gas engine. Gas engine oils are formulated to neutralise the harmful effects of these fuels.
Gas engines normally run for extended periods and aren’t exposed to the stop/start cycles that motor vehicle engines experience. Gas engines are usually housed indoors, either in a container or else in a proper building. This means that the oil tends to remain at a generally constant temperature and a known viscosity. Such an engine is seldom exposed to high-wear start-up conditions and will not benefit from a multigrade engine oil.
