PETRONAS has deployed its expertise to develop hydraulic oils that work in all kinds of industrial extremes. From situations where the presence of water can cause filter blockage, to applications where fluids need fire resistant properties – like those in major fire hazard environments such as hydraulic forging presses or robot welding machines.
The lifespan of a lubricant is a function of how that oil was stored and how it is being used. Filtering the oil and removing moisture from the oil will extend the lifespan of the hydraulic oil. The lifespan of a hydraulic oil is further lengthened by maintaining it at a moderate temperature.
The shelf life of a hydraulic oil is determined by its storage conditions. A hydraulic oil stored as recommended can have a shelf life of up to three years. When there is doubt about the suitability of a hydraulic oil, a sample of the oil can be analysed to determine the true condition of the oil.
Hydraulic oils should be stored indoors in a cool and dry area, away from direct sunlight and be kept at a temperature of between 0°C and 35°C.
Zinc is used as an anti-wear additive in many lubricants, preventing metal-to-metal contact between moving machine components. The zinc-additive has a secondary function of preventing corrosion and rust in the machinery.
Zinc-free hydraulic oils were developed as eco-friendlier alternatives to zinc-based hydraulic oils. In addition, zinc-free hydraulic oils are more compatible with yellow metals used in some hydraulic machinery.
